HenrySkudder

I'm Henry, a 22 year old graduate marketing student from Ascot, UK, and I created this website to not only forge myself a greater online presence, but also to establish a platform on which to brand myself, allowing me to further define my hopes and goals for the future.

About me

Throughout my time in high school, I never had the clearest idea of what I wanted to do in the future. Some of my strengths included studying maths and learning languages, specifically French and Spanish, although, understanding the two of these never really formed a clear career path in my head which I truly wanted to follow, as I mainly saw these skills as things that would help boost whatever job I went on to do, whilst unlocking the option to potentially study or live abroad at some point.

When I began hearing more about the study of marketing towards the end of my school career, my interest peaked. I could never quite pin down the exact thing about it that compelled me; perhaps the idea of going into a creative career with a variety of paths still to discover within it and choose from simply sounded ideal to me. In addition to this, the idea of a year of studying abroad excited me as it would allow me to experience a foreign culture, and with the possibility of other languages potentially coming into play I really couldn't resist this opportunity.

After starting the bachelor's degree that I recently completed at Lancaster University, entitled Marketing Management and Advertising (with Study Abroad), my enjoyment assured me that I wanted to go on working in the field of marketing.

Undergoing a 13 month marketing work placement in my third year of study, I picked up valuable skills that are sure to be proven useful in my future endeavours.

As for what the future holds, despite the ongoing uncertainty due to the current situation with COVID-19, I'd love to find a career opportunity post-graduation that encompasses both my personal interests and revolves primarily around the field that I'd like to continue exploring.

What have I done?

Work Experience and more

Although this would ideally already be full of marketing related roles, hopefully it will be sometime in the near future; for now I can say that I've at least dipped my toes into a variety of experiences.

Foreign Exchanges

The most enjoyable travel that I've done has to be the foreign exchanges that I've been on. The first, a week in France with a French family, was a trip organised for my A Level French class. The second was organised by myself through a Spanish friend of a friend. Both experiences introduced me to new parts of a culture that I thought I was already familiar with, whilst challenging my language skills.

Working as a Waiter

Working as a waiter was initially, more than anything, based around convenience for me, as the restaurant was located a mere three minutes drive from my house. Even still, I met some really great people and enjoyed the challenge of acclimatising to such a busy environment.

Marketing Work Experience

In my first workplace experience in marketing, I shadowed the Head of Marketing for two weeks, undergoing a range of individual tasks, giving me insight into the field. This really gave me the confidence to be able to say with certainty that marketing was an industry that I definitely wanted to explore in the future. I later secured two additional marketing roles that verified for me that I'd love to lean further into exploring what marketing has to offer.

Working as a Goal Judge

As a goal judge for polo matches, it was my responsibility to verify any goals scored at one end of the pitch, communicating this with the spectators and umpires, whilst also replacing balls falling out of bounds. Whilst being extremely enjoyable, this was my first job, and provided me valuable insight into a workplace for the very first time.

What keeps me busy?

My Hobbies

When at home, you'll often find me in my room looking to completely perfect a new song, either on the guitar, or downstairs on the piano. Teaching myself to play the two instruments is something that definitely challenges me, but as I enjoy it so much, it's never anything to stress over. Along with this, I enjoy singing, and post covers accompanied with either my guitar or piano playing onto social media when I'm feeling confident. I occasionally write my own music, and hope to further explore this path in the near future. At university, I found myself most drawn to a number of societies, attending weekly dance classes and getting involved in the university acapella group.

Outside of the arts, I enjoy the outdoors and often go on runs, or walks with the dog. On a rainy day, gaming helps me keep relaxed and put competitive nature to the test. As somebody who suffers with asthma, I was never too fond of excessive amounts of exercise, however at the beginning of 2020 I took it upon myself to begin a fitness journey, and after ten weeks saw extremely positive results. Since then, I've managed to incorporate running, along with other forms of exercise such as yoga and free weights into my weekly schedule and daily life.

I also recently began a blog here, on which I plan to post regularly.
